(Bandar Seri Begawan, 15th) Dr. Haris Kiskis, CEO of Brunei Fertilizer Industries (BFI), was awarded the 34th Francis New Medal by the International Fertiliser Society (IFS) on November 12.
On the same day, he delivered the 34th Francis Memorial Lecture during the closing ceremony of the IFS Annual Meeting at Robinson College, University of Cambridge.
Dr. Kiskis's speech fully demonstrated his outstanding leadership, expertise, and visionary contributions, which are the reasons for his receiving this honor. His speech focused on the Valery Pieris Circle—a region that covers only 10% of the world’s land area but is home to half of the world's population and produces most of the world’s rice, making it critical to global food security and climate change.
He particularly pointed out that rice cultivation in this region is facing increasingly severe challenges including nitrogen loss, methane emissions, extreme weather, and widespread zinc deficiency, all of which threaten the long-term sustainability of rice farming.
He explained how these realities are closely linked to Brunei’s role in supporting resilient agriculture, as they guide the development of Brunei Fertilizer Industries (BFI) and its commitment to producing high-quality and efficient fertilizers. Even amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, BFI has continued to provide tailor-made climate-smart fertilizer solutions through advanced technology and sustainable practices, thereby improving soil health, reducing waste, and contributing to a safer and more sustainable food system across the region.
Dr. Kiskis’s receipt of this award reflects the reputation of BFI and the entire Bruneian industrial sector.
His achievements have consolidated Brunei’s status as an emerging force and contributed to the global dialogue on sustainable development, technology, and advanced fertilizer production. This recognition not only enhances international confidence in Brunei’s capabilities but also encourages cooperation and investment, and helps Brunei realize its vision of economic resilience through world-class industrial development.
This medal is awarded every two years to an outstanding individual who has devoted their life to the global fertilizer industry and the advancement of scientific, technological, and economic knowledge in fertilizer production and utilization.
