Chiew Choon Man: No Political Background in Pursuing Politics, Cherishes Opportunities Given by the People

(Miri, 10th) — Miri MP and Deputy Federal Minister of Tourism Chiew Choon Man stated that he has had no political background or backing since entering politics, and it was with the trust of the people that he gained the opportunity to participate in politics. Thus, he has always cherished the platform given by the people and strives to fulfill his responsibilities during his term.

He made these remarks last night while addressing the "2026 Miri Young Entrepreneurs Night" dinner organized by the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce Youth Wing at the Palace Hotel banquet hall, as he shared his personal political journey.

Chiew pointed out that he has been serving as a Member of Parliament since 2022 for over three years, and will hit the four-year mark this December. Being able to become an MP and Deputy Minister at his age is a rather fortunate experience.

He said he comes from an ordinary family, without any political background, connections, or backing, and has been interested in public issues and politics since secondary school, which led him to study law.

"After graduating from law, I interned at the office of an MP in Selangor and participated in constituency service work, where I learned about politics and government operations."

He mentioned that he originally did not expect to become an MP, until the party assigned him to return to Miri to contest in 2022, where he ultimately received the people's support and was elected as a Member of Parliament.

Chiew said that at the time, he was almost a "blank slate", but the people of Miri were still willing to place their trust in him and give him a chance to serve; hence he has always been grateful for that.

"The road of politics is not easy and requires passion to go further. For me, Miri is where I grew up, so I have affection for the folks here, and coming back to serve my people gives me more motivation."

He believes that democracy carries high uncertainty; one may rise rapidly today but fall just as fast tomorrow, so politicians should cherish the opportunities they have while in office.

"You must first secure the party nomination, then win the election, then have your party form the government, and finally be appointed by the Prime Minister — so the level of uncertainty is actually very high."

Chiew emphasized that official positions do not belong to anyone forever; politicians should be prepared to step down at any time and do their best while they have the platform, rather than regret not having done enough after leaving office.

He also hopes that the new generation of politicians can build a new political culture, focus on serving the people, and maintain integrity and responsibility.

Chiew also encouraged young entrepreneurs to actively participate in public issues, bravely express their opinions, and voice critical views.

He said that young entrepreneurs are often in contact with society and the government, so they should take the initiative to understand government policies and public affairs, and facilitate exchanges so the government can directly hear the real problems faced by especially young entrepreneurs in business.

"We need to encourage young people to have independent thinking and viewpoints, so that our whole society can have more innovative ideas and opportunities for progress."
