(Kuching, 2nd) The Sarawak government has proactively developed a central database system called the Electronic Firearm System (e-Firearm System) to enhance the efficiency of shotgun license and permit management.
Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Dato Sri John Sikie, stated that the government places utmost importance on public safety and the well-being of the people, with particular attention to the prevention of firearm, especially shotgun, misuse.
He pointed out that current policies only allow the transfer of shotgun ownership between parents and children, with use strictly limited to the protection of agricultural products.
John Sikie stated that the government is always prepared to review existing policies, including the conditions and requirements for the “Carry and Use Permit,” according to current needs and safety standards.
“The system is an important digital transformation initiative aimed at improving the efficiency, transparency, and integrity of shotgun license management in Sarawak,” he said during his ministerial wrap-up speech at the state legislative assembly meeting yesterday (December 1).
He added that the electronic firearm system will not only serve as a platform to store and maintain records of license holders and those holding ‘Carry and Use Permits,’ but will also handle applications related to shotgun registration transfer and ownership changes.
John Sikie pointed out that through this digital system, management, monitoring, and safety reviews will become more systematic and efficient.
“The electronic firearm system is expected to be fully operational next year, marking another important milestone for the state government in digital services and in ensuring the safe and responsible management of firearms in Sarawak. This initiative demonstrates the state government's commitment to modernizing public service management, while prioritizing community safety and the responsible use of firearms in rural and agricultural areas,” he said.
