(Putrajaya, 22nd) The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has seized the mobile phone and SIM card of a TikTok social media user to investigate the alleged uploading of two pieces of false and offensive content regarding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar.
The MCMC said in a statement today that the content in question was suspected to be in response to a domestic orgy party incident, as well as the official announcement by Prime Minister Anwar on the granting of rebates to the people.
“Another uploaded piece of content involved this individual allegedly making false and extremely offensive accusations regarding the Prime Minister’s overseas official visit.”
The statement said that the MCMC recorded a statement from the individual at its headquarters in Cyberjaya yesterday to assist with the investigation.
The MCMC is investigating from the perspective of “improper use of network facilities or network services” under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588). If convicted, the individual faces a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
The MCMC emphasized that it will not tolerate any abuse of social media platforms to spread excessive insults or fabricated content, and will continue to take strict actions to maintain national harmony and public order.
