(Kuala Lumpur, 22nd) The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture stated that from January to May this year, the number of tourist arrivals to our country was 16.94 million, an increase of 20.4% compared to 14.07 million during the same period last year.
"Singapore contributed the most with 8.34 million visitors, an increase of 26.5%; Indonesia ranked second with 1.82 million visitors, an increase of 10.3%."
In a written reply to Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh's question in Parliament, the ministry noted that Chinese tourists ranked third, with 1.81 million visitors, but with a growth of 38.8% compared to the same period last year, making it the fastest-growing country.
This was followed by Thailand with 1.06 million visitors (an increase of 5.2%) and India with 664,811 visitors (32% increase).
"In addition, visitors from long-haul countries have also delivered encouraging results, with Australia and the United Kingdom contributing 198,968 and 185,197 visitors respectively, increases of 16.6% and 8.7%."
This trend has prompted the Ministry of Tourism to set a target of 47 million visitors for Visit Malaysia Year next year.
