(Putrajaya, 21st) Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said that the government is expected to announce the outcomes of negotiations with Thailand regarding issues on fisheries and agricultural product trade by the end of this month, including the issue of Malaysian shrimp exports to Thailand being hindered since 2017.
He pointed out that after officials from the Thai Ministry of Agriculture visited Malaysia, the negotiations have now entered their final stage, and the results are expected to benefit both countries.
"We will also (go to the location) for inspection; the negotiations are now at the final stage. This is a solution achieved in the shortest time possible."
He said this to the media today after officiating at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Animal Production and Veterinary Industry Summit (GAVIS).
Mohamad Sabu, in a statement after attending the inaugural meeting of the National Food Security Council last Thursday, said that the government is working to lift the restrictions faced by Malaysian shrimp exports to Thailand since 2017, as well as to resolve the issue regarding Malaysian livestock products not receiving approval to enter the Thai market since 2024.
He also mentioned that the meeting discussed Malaysia’s restriction on shrimp imports from Thailand starting June 1 this year, as well as Thailand’s strict inspections of Malaysian grouper fish exports.
