In conjunction with the Chinese New Year, "Safety Operation 23" has successfully reduced the number of traffic accidents in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Zanzuli, head of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, as of January 28— the fifth day of the Safety Operation 23— there have been 639 traffic accidents and 13,107 fines issued.
He stated that compared to the "Safety Operation 21" during last year's Chinese New Year, there has been a reduction; at that time, there were 681 traffic accidents and 14,230 fines issued.
"Currently, Safety Operation 23 is still ongoing and will end tomorrow (today). We will strive to reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents."
"I believe many Kuala Lumpur residents will return from their hometowns or vacations today and tomorrow, and the traffic flow in the capital is expected to increase to a high level. The Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division will take measures to ensure there are no severe traffic jams."
He said this to reporters last night (February 1) after inspecting the "Motorcycle Operation" and "Road Hooligan Operation."
Regarding the Motorcycle Operation and Road Hooligan Operation conducted on city roads in Kuala Lumpur starting at 10 p.m. last night, Mohamad Zanzuli said the police inspected 1,500 vehicles, focusing on illegal vehicle modifications not meeting specifications, vehicles without road tax, and those without driving licenses.
He said the operation, in cooperation with the Road Transport Department, aims to reduce traffic accidents and prevent the public, especially young people who like to gather in these areas, from performing motorcycle stunts.
"During the operation, 72 motorcycles with non-specification modifications were seized, and police issued 789 fines while the Road Transport Department issued 250 fines."
He added that three men who forged license plates were arrested and are being investigated under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offenses Act and Section 108 of the Road Transport Act.
The police also arrested a man in possession of ketum leaves under Section 30(3) of the Drugs Act, and another man for vehicle theft under Section 379A of the Penal Code.
All arrested individuals, aged between 15 to 25, are currently being held at a nearby police station for further investigation.
