Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah highlighted that the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), officially launched on Sunday, will serve as the sole border enforcement agency nationwide, integrating expertise and resources from various government departments to coordinate all border activities.
He stated that AKPS is under the Ministry of Home Affairs, and its establishment demonstrates the Madani government's commitment to creating a smooth and efficient border control framework.
“The government has implemented several initiatives to ensure our country maintains its competitive edge in global trade and provides efficient and trustworthy services at domestic entry points.”
He said this at the AKPS launch ceremony today (2nd), attended by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, Communications Minister Fahmi, Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin, and National Police Chief Tan Sri Razarudin.
Fadillah mentioned that the establishment of AKPS has five core objectives: unifying border enforcement functions under one command system, facilitating trade and travel activities, enhancing security, improving service delivery, and comprehensively strengthening national border security by collaborating with relevant agencies.
He emphasized that with our country serving as ASEAN chair this year, AKPS's establishment is important for our commitment to promoting regional cooperation and integration.
“Enhancing border control capabilities not only upholds national sovereignty but also promotes cross-border mobility, making cross-border movement in the ASEAN region smoother.”
He believes that in line with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, AKPS also plays a crucial role in ensuring friendly and efficient borders, as a significant number of tourists are expected to enter our country, and improving entry services can provide a positive preliminary impression for visitors.
He pointed out that in the national border control strategy, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is very critical, as it can help entry point officers monitor, evaluate, plan, and enforce against any form of threat encountered.
“For example, integrating and analyzing data from AI-equipped CCTV and cargo scanners can enhance officers' risk analysis capabilities. This proactive measure can assist agencies like AKPS in intercepting potential threats before they occur, thereby improving the overall security level of our entry points and borders.”
Additionally, Fadillah added, data powered by advanced AI algorithms, such as facial recognition and intelligent document processing, can simplify the screening process for officers checking personnel and goods.
“This situation will directly expedite the clearance of low-risk goods, which is vital for enhancing the competitiveness of national ports and freight terminals.”
He said the government will continue investing in research and development to explore emerging technologies and systems to further strengthen national border management capabilities.
“Collaboration with academic institutions and private enterprises and learning from the best practices of other countries is vital for this effort. By leveraging the best resources, AKPS can maintain its leading advantage, ensuring our borders remain strong and resilient.”
AKPS was officially established on October 17, 2024, following the enactment of the Border Control and Protection Agency Act, with Datuk Seri Khazani serving as its first director.
