In conjunction with the Chinese New Year "Safety Campaign 23" (OP Selamat 23), the police issued a total of 104,235 fines for various offenses.
According to Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri, this year's number of fines is a 43% decrease compared to the 183,033 fines issued during last year's "Safety Campaign 21".
He stated that out of the fines issued, 44,339 involved six main offenses: speeding, overtaking in the emergency lane, double line overtaking, queue overtaking, running red lights, and using communication devices (mobile phones) while driving.
He continued, during this period there were a total of 407 traffic congestion hotspots and 76 accident black spots in the country, covering federal highways, interstate roads, and urban roads. Additionally, on highways, 25 traffic congestion hotspots and 17 accident black spots were identified.
“To this end, the police have set up an Emergency Response Team (ERT) to conduct continuous monitoring, and it is estimated that 1.82 million vehicles will use the North-South Expressway on Sunday (2nd). The Emergency Response Team will assist in maintaining smooth traffic on the expressway.”
He stated this at a press conference after attending the "Safety Campaign 23" event held at the Tapah rest area (southbound) on the North-South Expressway on Sunday. Attendees included the acting Perak Police Chief, Zulkifli.
Mohd Yusri stated that the police will conduct a study to determine if the reduction in violations is due to an increase in road users’ awareness of traffic regulations, or if the safety promotion and prevention activities previously implemented have been effective.
“We want to understand whether these campaigns have been effective in enhancing road users’ safety awareness, making them more cautious and consciously abiding by traffic rules and laws.”
