(Kuala Lumpur, 3rd) Tan Sri Hasnah, Chief Judge of Malaya, will perform the powers and duties (including constitutional functions) of the Chief Justice of the Federal Court until the position is filled.
The Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court issued a statement today, saying this move is in accordance with Article 131A of the Federal Constitution, as well as Sections 9(1)(b) and 9(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 (Act 91).
According to the statement, the Malaysian judiciary remains steadfast in fulfilling its duty as the guardian of justice, and will continue to strive to serve the people and the nation to the best of its ability.
After Malaysia's first female Chief Justice of the Federal Court, Tun Tengku Maimun, was compulsorily retired yesterday, the position is now vacant.
Tun Tengku Maimun was appointed as Chief Justice on May 2, 2019.
