Chinese Fishing Boat Capsizes Near South Korea, 9 Missing

The South Korean Coast Guard said on the 10th that a Chinese fishing boat capsized that day in waters near Gunsan City, North Jeolla Province, South Korea. Of the 11 people on board, two were rescued by a nearby passing cargo ship, while the status of the other nine remains unclear. The Chinese Consulate General in Gwangju has confirmed the news.

The South Korean Coast Guard has urgently dispatched patrol ships and helicopters to the accident site and will do their utmost in the search and rescue efforts.

The day before, another Chinese fishing boat capsized near Geojedo Island, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. According to a report from China News Service, the Chinese Consulate General in Gwangju stated on the 9th that there were 11 people on board, of which six were rescued, two died, and three are missing.

Data released on the 10th by the West Sea Five Islands Special Guard Unit of the Central Regional Coast Guard of Korea shows that since the start of the blue crab fishing season from September to October, there have been an average of 190 Chinese fishing boats illegally fishing per day in the area near the Northern Limit Line in the western waters of South Korea, an increase of 30 to 40 boats compared to the daily average of more than 150 in September and more than 160 in October last year.
