The Spanish emergency rescue department pointed out on the 9th that multiple accidents occurred on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands on the 8th due to abnormally rough waves, resulting in 3 deaths and 15 injuries.

According to the local emergency rescue department, around 3 pm on the 8th, many people fell into the water at Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife due to large waves. One woman died, and nine people were injured, three of them seriously. The injured have all been sent to hospital.

That same afternoon, a man fell into the water at the seaside of La Guancha town in northern Tenerife and died after being taken to hospital. The beach rescue team also found a man floating on the sea near El Cabezo beach in southern Tenerife that afternoon. The man died despite resuscitation efforts.

In addition, six French tourists were injured after being swept into the sea by huge waves at a beach in northeastern Tenerife that day. Police said these tourists were swept away because they ignored warning buoys set up nearby.

The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,100 kilometers from mainland Spain, and are a winter holiday destination for European tourists.

On the 8th, the Spanish Meteorological Agency issued a coastal severe sea condition warning for many places in the Canary Islands, reminding the public to stay away from piers, reefs, and areas where waves crash. Police and maritime rescue agencies have strengthened their patrols.
