(Kuching, 8th) Dalat District Councilor Datuk Seri Chan Siaw Ming pointed out that the girls’ dormitory at Dalat Secondary School (SMK Dalat) has been identified as an unsafe building, but students are still residing there. The authorities must take immediate action to resolve the related safety issues.

According to TVS reports, Chan Siaw Ming stated that student safety must be the primary consideration, as the dormitory was not included in the previously approved school development plans.

"I have been informed that the dormitory has been deemed an unsafe building by the Public Works Department (JKR).

"However, the dormitory was not included in the scope of this engineering project, and female students are still living there. Therefore, the issue that requires the most urgent attention is the safety of the students."

She made these remarks to the media yesterday after attending the handover ceremony for the construction of 18 replacement classrooms at Dalat Secondary School and the new 12-classroom building project at Semop Secondary School (SMK Semop).

Chan Siaw Ming, who is also Minister of Women, Children and Community Welfare Development, pointed out that Dalat Secondary School, with a history of nearly 48 years, still has several old wooden buildings, some of which have been infested by termites.

She said that although the dormitory is well-managed and the environment is clean, signs of termite damage and aging are clearly visible from window frames and other amenities, highlighting that the problem urgently needs to be resolved.

Meanwhile, Chan Siaw Ming noted that the 18 classrooms and related facilities handed over for use that day can only meet part of the actual needs of the school.

She pointed out that Dalat Secondary School originally applied to build 36 classrooms to accommodate nearly 900 students, but only 18 classrooms were eventually approved under the special project.

"Although we are very grateful that this project was approved, the school still has many needs yet to be resolved, including the expansion of classrooms, the auditorium, dormitory facilities, and other supporting equipment."

She said that teachers’ dormitories also need improvement to provide a more comfortable and safer living environment, as teachers shoulder an important responsibility in nurturing the next generation.

Chan Siaw Ming also thanked the Ministry of Education for the implementation of these projects and expressed appreciation to the Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Nanta, for supporting local educational development.

Although there has been progress in the construction of the school, she stated that the school still has many unmet needs and hopes these issues can be included in future development planning to safeguard the welfare and safety of students and teaching staff.
