Major Mishap by Jewelry Company Staff: 12 Kilograms of Gold Jewelry Left Behind on High-Speed Train

The staff of a jewelry company carelessly left behind a suitcase containing 12 kilograms of gold jewelry, estimated to be worth over ten million RMB (about 5.6 million MYR), on a Chinese high-speed train. Fortunately, the experienced train conductor discovered it in time and, following strict and efficient procedures, managed to return the lost items to their rightful owner in a short period, averting an emergency for an international jewelry company preparing for an exhibition.

According to a report by 'Jimu News,' the incident occurred at 7:04 am on January 26th, when the D914 train from Beijing to Shanghai arrived at its final destination. After all passengers had disembarked, train conductor Wu Jiawen conducted her routine inspection of the carriage. Upon reaching Carriage 6, she noticed a black suitcase left next to the wall under seat 27.

Wu Jiawen tried to lift the suitcase herself but found it unusually heavy. She immediately called a crew member to assist, and the two of them together carried the suitcase to the dining car. Under the supervision of a railway police officer, they turned on a video recorder and opened the suitcase to inspect its contents. To their surprise, it was neatly packed with over a dozen bags of glittering gold jewelry, each bag weighing about a kilogram. A preliminary estimate put the value of the entire suitcase at over ten million RMB.

"This is the most valuable item I've found on a train in over 20 years of working," Wu Jiawen recalled afterwards. As she was preparing to report the matter according to procedures, her handheld device received a new work order, indicating that a passenger was urgently searching for a black suitcase that matched the description exactly.

Wu Jiawen immediately tried to contact the owner using the reserved phone number in the system. After several unsuccessful calls, she left a voice message. About half an hour later, the anxious owner called back. It turned out that the owner was a staff member from a jewelry company who was carrying a total of seven suitcases of exhibits to Shanghai for an important exhibition. When disembarking, a new employee accidentally left behind the most important suitcase containing the gold jewelry. The passenger, sounding very anxious on the phone, said a colleague had been sent rushing back to the station, hoping to retrieve the lost item directly, since any delay would affect the morning's exhibition setup.

Although Wu Jiawen understood the urgency, she was also well aware that when dealing with such a high-value lost item, the handover procedures had to be strict and safe, leaving no room for error. She explained to the passenger that, according to regulations, the station and the police had to be notified, and she described the process.

After communicating, both parties finally agreed to meet in person for the handover at Platform 6 of Shanghai Station. An hour later, a company colleague arrived. Wu Jiawen requested that the suitcase be opened to verify the items, but the other party was hesitant, explaining that the suitcase contained unreleased exhibition pieces and time was of the essence.

In response, Wu Jiawen handled the situation flexibly and professionally. She suggested, "Would it be convenient for you to connect your company manager via video call now? We can complete the verification process through video." Once connected, Wu Jiawen displayed each item in the suitcase clearly on camera. On the other end of the call, the company manager carefully identified and finally confirmed that all the gold jewelry was present and intact, with nothing missing.

After this thorough 'remote verification,' the 12-kilogram suitcase of valuable gold was finally returned safely to the company staff under the witness of all involved. The jewelry company personnel expressed their deep gratitude for the train staff’s high sense of responsibility and efficient cooperation. Thanks to the conductor’s calm and composed handling, a potentially significant loss and disruption to an important business event was successfully avoided.
