At the first session of the 16th National Assembly of Vietnam on the 7th, Su Lin, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was elected President of Vietnam by a vote. His term will be from 2026 to 2031.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the Vietnamese National Assembly passed the resolution by electronic voting to appoint Su Lin as the new President of Vietnam. The voting results showed that all 495 participating representatives voted in favor.
Su Lin was then sworn in. In his inaugural speech, Su Lin said that as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the country, his primary task is to maintain a peaceful and stable environment, promote the nation’s rapid and sustainable development, improve all aspects of people’s livelihoods, ensure that the people enjoy all the fruits of development, and promote Vietnam to make greater contributions to regional and world peace, stability, development, and progress.
Su Lin was born in July 1957 in Hung Yen Province, northern Vietnam, and has long served in the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam. From April 2016 to May 2024, Su Lin served as Minister of Public Security. In May 2024, Su Lin was elected President. In August 2024, Su Lin was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and in October 2024, he no longer concurrently held the post of President. On January 23, 2026, Su Lin was elected General Secretary of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam at the first plenary session.
