(Miri, 30th) Sarawak DAP Secretary Alan Ling is pleased to see that the federal government of Miri has approved funding to upgrade the Sungai Tujoh checkpoint. This is undoubtedly good news for those who need to travel across provinces to Limbang, Lawas, Sabah, or Brunei.
He said the news brought by Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man is indeed uplifting, but there is still room for improvement. Currently, the Sungai Tujoh checkpoint, being an important land gateway connecting Sarawak and Brunei, only operates until 10 PM. This limits the convenience and scheduling of travel between the two regions to some extent.
He proposed that the governments of our country and Brunei discuss and jointly implement a 24-hour opening policy for Sungai Tujoh and other northern Sarawak checkpoints.
Alan Ling stated that he has already discussed this proposal with Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man, and hopes that the latter will propose it to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the upcoming parliament to facilitate the implementation of this initiative.
He directly said that opening the checkpoints 24 hours can not only enhance the movement of people between the two countries but can also provide more convenience for cooperation in trade, tourism, and other fields between the two regions.
“This fully meets the economic development needs of Sarawak and the increasingly complementary economies of Brunei. It can further strengthen the flow of people between the two regions, promote regional connectivity, and enhance bilateral relations.”
He further pointed out that extending the opening hours of the checkpoints will greatly facilitate the travel of residents, tourists, and businessmen between the two regions, especially since both countries currently have to pass through bilateral roads, with frequent cargo transportation.
Alan Ling urged the relevant authorities to seriously consider the proposal to open all checkpoints between our country and Brunei 24 hours.
