(Kuala Lumpur, 4th May) The Ministry of Health (MOH) has launched an initiative to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology for lung health screening, aiming to detect lung-related diseases in the population early.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Zulkifli stated that this is one of the key measures proposed in the National Lung Health Plan 2025-2030, designed to strengthen prevention, screening, and treatment activities for lung diseases.

He highlighted that AI-based screening is more effective and accurate compared to X-ray screenings.

"With the capabilities of artificial intelligence, our detection rate or case identification rate will improve significantly," he said during a media briefing on the National Lung Health Plan 2025-2030.

Zulkifli revealed that seven government clinics, including Kok Lanas Clinic, Kajang Clinic, Beserah Clinic, Seberang Perai Clinic, and Bentong Clinic, will adopt AI technology for lung health screening among target groups, with costs being reasonable.

"We will see a return on investment. We have invested RM70,000 for these seven clinics, which is highly worthwhile as it allows for the early detection of such diseases," he noted.

He emphasized that the National Lung Health Initiative is a new approach, integrating control over infectious and non-communicable diseases as well as risk factors.

Additionally, the initiative will focus on key risk factors, including smoking, environmental pollution, and occupational risks in workplaces.

"This initiative will involve a comprehensive collaboration across sectors, including the government, private sector, NGOs, and professional organizations."
