On the 1st, U.S. President Trump visited a newly built illegal immigrant detention center in Florida dubbed “Alligator Devil’s Island,” praising the facility’s harsh conditions and inescapability, while joking that alligators would be responsible for guarding it.
According to AFP, the new illegal immigrant detention center, which cost $450 million (1.888 billion ringgit) to build, is located deep in the Florida Everglades on an abandoned airfield. The area is inhabited by many alligators and venomous snakes, making access difficult.
Trump told the media: “Very soon, this facility will detain some of the most dangerous immigrants on the face of the earth, some of the most vicious people.”
Trump said the facility is surrounded by miles of hazardous swamps, and that the only real way out is deportation.
This hot, mosquito-infested facility symbolizes the Trump administration’s determination for large-scale deportation of undocumented immigrants.
To promote the facility’s launch, U.S. officials posted photos on social media of alligators wearing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hats. Florida Republicans are also selling alligator-themed apparel and beer koozies.
The name “Alligator Devil’s Island” is inspired by the infamous federal prison on Alcatraz Island, commonly known as “Devil’s Island.” Not long ago, Trump said he wished to reopen that facility, stirring up debate.
