The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) announced on the 1st that starting next Tuesday (the 8th), passengers flying with Japanese airlines will not be allowed to place power banks in overhead luggage compartments; they must be kept with the passenger at all times.
According to the new regulations, passengers on Japanese carriers such as All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) must keep power banks with them; if they are charging electronic devices on board, they must monitor their status at all times. For those flying with foreign carriers, passengers must comply with each airline’s respective regulations.
Under Japan’s Aviation Act, passengers are not permitted to place power banks in checked luggage. With approval, a maximum of two power banks between 100Wh (watt-hours) and 160Wh each are allowed; power banks over 160Wh are generally prohibited on board.
