The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission of South Korea emphasized on the 1st that after on-site inspections in Ganghwa Island, an area bordering North Korea, local radiation levels remain normal.

Recently, there have been reports that North Korea discharged nuclear wastewater from the Pyongsan Uranium Concentration Plant in North Hwanghae Province into the Yellow Sea. North Korea has a uranium concentration plant in Pyongsan.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission also indicated that radiation levels across all areas within South Korea meet standards.

The commission stated that it had earlier set up automatic environmental radiation monitoring stations at 244 locations nationwide, with average sampling every 15 minutes. As of 11 a.m. on the 1st, national radiation doses were all within the range of routine natural background radiation.

Regarding online rumors that radiation levels at a beach in Ganghwa County, Incheon City, have reached eight times the usual level, the commission stated that results from on-site testing by inspectors from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety showed that radiation levels in the area are also within the normal range.
