A couple had a heated argument, and a man, acting as a good Samaritan to mediate, angered the husband, who stabbed and killed the man.
The incident happened at 7:50 a.m. on July 5, on Chayangkun Road in Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand.
According to Thai media Channel 8, the victim was 27-year-old Thachakit, who was stabbed twice in the chest and died from his wounds en route to the hospital.
Local police stated that the suspect is 58-year-old Nopphong, who turned himself in to the police station after the incident.
The victim’s relative, Wittaya, said in an interview that at the time, the victim was at a grocery store about 100 meters from his home, when he heard a couple arguing fiercely in a restaurant across the street.
Concerned for the woman’s safety, Thachakit went forward to intervene, which led to a conflict between Thachakit and Nopphong.
Wittaya said that after the dispute calmed, both parties went their separate ways. Later, Thachakit realized he had left his phone at the grocery store and went back to retrieve it.
He said that Nopphong happened to ride by on his motorcycle and stopped near Thachakit. Nopphong then approached with a knife, stabbed Thachakit twice, and fled the scene.
Wittaya claimed that Nopphong often argued with drivers who parked in front of his restaurant and frequently had conflicts with his wife, even accusing Nopphong of domestic violence.
According to Channel 8, police have charged Nopphong under Article 290 of the Criminal Code (assault causing death). This crime carries a maximum sentence of 3 to 15 years in prison.
