Sarawak Promotes Leadership Tourism Program, Building a Global 'Live Classroom' for Leaders

(Kuching, 17th) Sarawak plans to transform the entire state into a 'live classroom', inviting international leaders, corporate executives, and university groups to pay to learn about Sarawak's development, governance, and social models. Through the proposed 'Leadership Tourism' program, Sarawak aims to position itself as an important global hub for leadership development.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that this initiative will not only enhance Sarawak's status as a global leadership development center, but also bring in high-value tourism revenue with longer visitor stays.

He said international visitors can gain in-depth understanding of Sarawak's development models, including renewable energy transition, rural community development, digital public services, social harmony, and cultural preservation.

"International visitors will pay to come and learn about Sarawak’s concrete success stories achieved under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030)."

He made these remarks in his keynote speech last night at the pilot launch of the Institute of Contemporary Leadership (ICL) in Kuching.

Abang Johari said the concept combines value-based leadership training with immersive tourism, allowing participants to step outside their comfort zones and treat the host location as a 'live laboratory' to stimulate thinking and leadership development.

He said, in terms of incoming visitors, Sarawak will welcome learning groups from the region and internationally, including corporate executives, ASEAN youth network members, as well as global universities seeking to learn from Sarawak’s experiences.

He added that this program will also benefit the local economy, as participants tend to stay longer and will spend on hotels, transportation, accommodation and dining, as well as in creative industries.

Meanwhile, the proposed model will also include an outbound component, allowing Sarawak's promising youth, young professionals, and community drivers to visit major international financial centers, technology hubs, and historically significant governance institutions.

Abang Johari said these participants will study and compare foreign public policies, digital ecosystems, and structural innovations, making this program a human capital development initiative, rather than just an exchange activity or incentive trip.

He said, “The ‘Leadership Tourism’ concept represents a brand-new method of leadership development, and can complement Sarawak’s existing tourism strengths.”

“Just as Malaysia has successfully promoted eco-tourism and medical tourism, Sarawak, with its rich eco-tourism potential, is embracing a golden opportunity to develop a new avenue for leadership, branding it as ‘Leadership Tourism’.”

Abang Johari instructed the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) to work with the ICL to quickly research and implement this initiative, propelling Sarawak to become the global center for ‘Leadership Tourism’.
