Shin Yang Group Allocates Over RM420,000: 9 Trainees Receive Sponsorship to Join Maritime Industry

(Sibu, 17th) — The Sarawak Maritime Academy (SMA) held a sponsorship and signing ceremony today, where Shin Yang Group Berhad (SYGB) sponsored 9 trainees with a total sponsorship amounting to RM428,750.

The 9 sponsored trainees include 6 nautical trainees and 3 marine engineering trainees, who are currently receiving maritime education and training at the Sarawak Maritime Academy.

Dr. Yang Jin Hua, Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Maritime Academy, expressed gratitude for Shin Yang Group’s continued support in maritime education and the cultivation of young maritime talents.

He said that the close cooperation between the academy and industry partners is crucial to ensuring that maritime education and training meet industry needs, while also providing students with a clear development pathway from academic and practical training towards professional maritime careers.

Captain Wong King Sing, Board Director of Sarawak Maritime Academy and DPA, CSO, Manager for Crewing and Container Ship Chartering of Shin Yang Group Berhad, also delivered a speech at the ceremony. He shared his personal experience of being sponsored by Shin Yang Group to become a trainee at the Sarawak Maritime Academy in 2009 and subsequently promoted to captain.

He stated that his journey fully reflects the important role played by the Sarawak Maritime Academy and Shin Yang Group in cultivating professional maritime talents.

He pointed out that seafarers play a vital role in the maritime industry. Ships drive global trade, and it is seafarers who are responsible for operating these vessels.

With Shin Yang Group’s continuous expansion of its fleet, the demand for skilled seafarers keeps increasing, and thus, the group will continue to support Sarawak Maritime Academy in nurturing local maritime talents.

He also encouraged other major industry companies to continue supporting maritime education and seafarer training initiatives.

SYGB CEO Lim Peng Long pointed out that from 2009 to 2026, Shin Yang Group will have sponsored a total of 54 trainees to pursue diplomas in Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering at the Sarawak Maritime Academy, with a total sponsorship of RM2,401,250.

He stated that, as of now, 52 graduates and seafarers from the Sarawak Maritime Academy have been employed by Shin Yang Group, reflecting the group’s long-term commitment to talent cultivation in maritime and providing employment opportunities to Malaysian trainees.

Azwari, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Region from the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency, also said that the cooperation between Sarawak Maritime Academy and Shin Yang Group embodies the joint commitment to cultivating Malaysian seafarers with professional skills and international recognition.

He praised Shin Yang Group for supporting future maritime professionals, recognized Sarawak Maritime Academy for strengthening industry collaboration, and encouraged scholarship recipients to uphold professionalism, discipline, and integrity.

According to the sponsorship arrangement, the 9 trainees will receive both academic education and practical maritime training at the Sarawak Maritime Academy, enabling them to master the knowledge, professional skills, and expertise required to embark on maritime careers.

Among them, 6 nautical trainees will pursue a Diploma in Nautical Studies, while 3 marine engineering trainees will pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering.

The academy stated that the signing ceremony marks an important step for the trainees towards a professional seafaring career, while further strengthening the collaboration between maritime education institutions, industry, and relevant government bodies.

Sarawak Maritime Academy will continue to work closely with maritime industry partners to provide education, training, and career development opportunities for young people interested in the maritime sector, and contribute to the long-term development of Malaysia’s maritime human resources.

Attendees included Shin Yang Group Berhad Group Executive Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Ling Chiong Ho, Executive Director Ling Chang Ping, Group Managing Director Ling Chang Sheng, Chief Executive Officer Lim Peng Long, and Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency Sarawak Region Deputy Operations Director Azwari, among others.

In addition, representatives from EFA Communities, Sarawak Foundation, Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency, Shin Yang Group, Malaysia Shipowners’ Association, Sarawak Maritime Industry Association, Sarawak and Sabah Shipowners’ Associations, Kuching Barrage Management Authority, and MNK Services, as well as the Sarawak Maritime Academy management, staff, sponsored trainees, and parents or guardians also attended the ceremony.
