Indonesia Expands Railway Network with Goal of Surpassing 10,000 Kilometers Total Length

Indonesia is accelerating the expansion of its national railway network, aiming to increase the total railway length nationwide to 10,524 kilometers. This initiative is intended to reduce logistics costs, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote balanced regional economic development.

According to reports, data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation show that public demand for railway transport continues to grow. Annual train passenger volume will rise from approximately 500 million in 2024 to nearly 550 million in 2025, reflecting a year-on-year growth rate of 8.8%.

Indonesian Minister of Transportation, Budi, stated that the continued increase in passenger numbers reflects the public's growing trust in railway transport services.

He said that future railway construction will be planned based on the actual needs of each region, including urban rail transit systems on Java Island, the Trans-Sumatra railway network, and key logistic corridors on Kalimantan Island, among other major projects.

Budi pointed out that improving railway infrastructure not only helps increase transport efficiency but also promotes the expansion of economic activities into more regions, thus narrowing regional development gaps.

Currently, Indonesia’s operational railway network covers Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Papua Islands, with a total length of 6,927 kilometers.
