(Bandar Seri Begawan, 26th) Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) hosted the second annual ASEAN University Network Digital Transformation (AUN Dx) Thematic Network Conference from June 25th to 26th at its Chancellor Hall Senate Meeting Room. The event gathered representatives from member institutions of the ASEAN University Network to jointly explore the management of information and communication technology (ICT), digital transformation, and artificial intelligence (AI) governance in higher education, with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation.

The conference officially opened on June 25th, with welcome addresses delivered by Hajah Tutiaty, Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Brunei; Takorn, Chairman of the AUN Dx Executive Committee; and Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, Executive Director of the ASEAN University Network.

Hajah Tutiaty noted that as global and regional higher education faces rapid technological advancements, continual evolution of the digital ecosystem, and the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence, universities must not only strengthen the exchange of experience, but also jointly develop pragmatic and impactful frameworks, standards, and development strategies to tackle the challenges of the new era.

Dr. Choltis pointed out that digital transformation is profoundly changing the direction of ASEAN higher education and that AUN Dx plays a key role in helping universities enhance their ability to address new challenges, as well as promote regional innovation cooperation.

Takorn stated that AUN Dx continues to optimise its digital transformation framework, aiming to establish unified and leading regional standards, promote best practices in digital services, and strengthen the capacity of ASEAN universities in digital transformation.

During the opening ceremony, UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr. Hazri delivered a keynote speech entitled "Coexisting with Artificial Intelligence: UBD's Role in Brunei's Digital Future," exploring how artificial intelligence is reshaping higher education and emphasizing that universities should proactively harness AI, rather than be dominated by it.

He said that learners, educators, and university development goals should always be at the core of digital transformation, which must be supported by sound governance systems and the cultivation of digital literacy.

The two-day conference brought together representatives from AUN member universities, AUN Dx associate member universities, the AUN Dx secretariat, and the AUN secretariat. During the event, dedicated workshops on "AUN Dx Framework Version 2.0" and "AUN Dx AI Governance and Ethics Framework Version 1.0" were held, as well as themed forums to discuss the future development direction of the network.

The AUN Dx Thematic Network was approved for establishment at the 39th AUN Board of Trustees Meeting in July 2024. It aims to provide a platform for ASEAN higher education institutions to exchange, share expertise, promote standardized ICT management, and enhance the digital transformation capabilities of regional universities.

As the host of this year’s conference, UBD reaffirmed its commitment to actively promote regional cooperation on digital transformation and ICT governance. Currently, the university has integrated generative AI into teaching, research, and campus policies, and is also formulating a digital transformation roadmap to provide clear guidance for future development.
