A Chinese male tourist was caught smoking in a no-smoking zone at Orchard Road in Singapore and allegedly attempted to bribe auxiliary police officers twice with 50 Singapore dollars (approximately 165 ringgit).

The 34-year-old defendant, Huang Binghao, faced two charges of allegedly violating the Prevention of Corruption Act in the Singapore State Courts on the 9th. The defendant did not indicate whether he intended to plead guilty in court and is currently out on bail with an amount of 5,000 Singapore dollars.

According to a press release issued by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau of Singapore on the 8th, Huang Binghao, who was on holiday in Singapore on April 10, 2025, was caught smoking in a no-smoking area near Tangs Plaza on Orchard Road by auxiliary police officers dispatched by the National Environment Agency.

He then attempted to bribe two auxiliary police officers with 50 dollars each, inducing them not to take enforcement action against him.

The auxiliary police officers refused to accept the bribe on the spot and referred the case to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau for handling.

The defendant has hired a lawyer. As the lawyer needs time to receive instructions from the client and make representations, the case is postponed to be heard again on June 6.

According to Section 6 of the Singapore Prevention of Corruption Act, if convicted of corruption, the offender will face a maximum fine of 100,000 Singapore dollars, or a maximum imprisonment of five years, or both.
