(Kuching, 5th) With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) continuously transforming the global system and priorities, data is gradually becoming an important new driving force impacting Sarawak's economic growth and the implementation of social responsibility.
According to reports from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari pointed out that over the past 10 years, breakthroughs in chip technology and improvements in data storage capacity have fundamentally reshaped the global economic structure.
He stated that this transformation is entering a new stage—AI is no longer just an auxiliary technology, but has become a key core element in formulating development strategies.
"Five years ago, we were still only discussing AI, but today it has become very important. In 10 years, AI has developed to a much higher level, and in the next five years, it will evolve into 'strategic intelligence'," he said.
He made these remarks during a strategic discussion with the industry in Manchester, UK. The meeting was hosted by Manchester Rusholme MP Afzal Khan and took place at the British Muslim Heritage Centre on Monday (May 4, local time).
Abang Johari further emphasized that data has now become a new strategic resource, not only driving economic expansion but also making the implementation of social responsibility more systematic and impactful.
"Data will bring us new things. It is a resource that enables us to move forward, whether in economy or social responsibility," he said.
He added that technological progress must be supported by a complete ecosystem—including semiconductor chips, data centers, as well as robust information management systems—to ensure effective implementation.
He also pointed out that Sarawak will continue to strengthen relevant capabilities through talent development, including sending students to further their studies overseas, in order to enhance knowledge capacity and develop intellectual property ownership.
During the meeting, both parties also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen strategic cooperation and explore more new opportunities conducive to Sarawak's development as well as the global community.
