(Kanowit, 5th) The RM12 million Nibong Tada Acute Water System project in Kanowit has been fully completed and put into operation, significantly enhancing the clean water supply capacity for the local community and strengthening rural water coverage in the region.
Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, stated that the project was fully funded by the Sarawak government. Construction began in November last year and was completed in less than a year, demonstrating the state government's high efficiency in infrastructure development.
During his inspection of the facility on Monday (May 4), he told the media that the water treatment plant is equipped with two elevated water tanks with capacities of 3.5 million liters and 1 million liters, respectively, with the Rajang River serving as the raw water source, which is abundant and stable.

According to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit, Julaihi pointed out that this project is part of the plan to improve clean water supply in Kanowit and its surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, a major component of the second phase of the Kanowit water supply project—the Jalan Durin booster pump station—is progressing as planned and is expected to further expand the water supply coverage.
He said the pump station is designed with a daily capacity of 1.5 million liters and will be supplied by the Salim water treatment plant, which is currently being upgraded.
He added that the project also includes the laying of 55 kilometers of water pipelines, including rerouting works through Sibu Jaya, to ensure broader and sufficient water supply to target areas.

Ultimately, the treated water will be delivered to the Bukong Jagoi distribution tank, which has a daily capacity of 3.5 million liters.
Julaihi stated that these two projects are part of the Sarawak government’s large-scale water supply plan, with a total investment of nearly RM7 billion, covering about 360 water supply projects across the state.
