(Sibu, 13th) The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has successfully set a record in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with a traditional Melanau swing ('itut') standing 18.3 meters tall, making it one of the main highlights of the 2025 Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF).
This swing was constructed by the Melanau Welfare Association of Kampung Nangka, Sibu, and is located at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1. During the 10-day festival (starting from July 3), it attracted as many as 2,288 visitors to experience it, far exceeding the original target of 2,000 people, thanks to consistently good weather during the period.
At last night’s closing ceremony, SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh received the certificate of recognition from MBOR representative Edwin Yeoh. The event was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Dr Sim stated that this year's BCF successfully showcased Borneo’s diverse ethnic cultures, music, and traditions, featuring various performances, community activities, and cultural exhibitions.
He said, “During these 10 days, the public had the opportunity to witness the creativity and traditional skills of various ethnic groups, further strengthening Borneo’s spirit of unity and cultural identity.”
His speech was read by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee on his behalf.
He also thanked everyone involved in the preparation and execution, including government agencies, cultural groups, vendors, and enforcement units for their contributions to the success of this year’s BCF.
He noted that BCF is not only an entertainment event, but also an important platform to promote social connections, boost tourism, and enhance community wellbeing.
“This is a key element in building resilient, united, and culture-centric communities.”
Dr Sim also congratulated SMC and all co-organizers, stating that this year’s BCF is one of the most successful to date and expressed his hope that the spirit of unity and cultural identity will continue in daily life.
This annual festival brings together participation from over 30 ethnic groups and features a rich array of programs including musical performances, art exhibitions, community kitchens, and traditional food markets.
