(Kuching, 16th) A fire broke out early this morning at a double-storey terraced house in Tupong Ulu, Kuching, resulting in the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl, while a 14-year-old boy was rescued and sent to the hospital for treatment.
The Fire and Rescue Department’s Petra Jaya branch, after receiving the report, rushed to the scene at Lorong 5 Permai Jaya at 2:23 a.m., supported by personnel from the Tabuan Jaya fire station to carry out rescue operations.
According to the fire department, the affected unit was a permanent double-storey terraced house, with about 70% of the structure destroyed by flames. The affected area was estimated to be 20 by 40 square feet.
Preliminary reports indicated that two people were trapped inside the burning house at the time. Firefighters immediately initiated an internal rescue operation, bravely entering the smoke-filled building to search and evacuate those trapped.
Both trapped individuals were eventually successfully brought out of the fire by rescuers. Firefighters performed initial on-site emergency aid for the injured while waiting for medical personnel from the Ministry of Health to arrive.
The 14-year-old boy survived the incident and was transported by ambulance to the hospital for further treatment. However, after examination by Ministry of Health personnel, the 13-year-old girl was confirmed dead at the scene.
The blaze was brought under control at 3:14 a.m., and the entire rescue operation concluded at 3:40 a.m.
After confirming the safety of the scene, firefighters handed the two victims over to health authorities and the police for further action.
