(Kuching, 16th) 45-year-old widower Kamarudin Kassim took on the heavy responsibility of raising two school-going children on his own after the loss of his wife earlier this year, and has sought ongoing assistance from Kuching Hope Place.
Kamarudin stated that he resigned from his job as a factory machine operator in 2024 to care full-time for his wife, Jamaliah, whose health was steadily deteriorating.
Since January this year, Jamaliah had been receiving aid from Hope Place. However, she eventually passed away due to health complications.
“At the beginning of this year, when the doctor told me my wife didn’t have much time left, I felt all hope for the future slowly fading away,” Kamarudin said.
The couple have two children, aged 8 and 15, both of whom are still in school.
Despite having to care for his wife for a long time, Kamarudin still grew vegetables and seedlings for sale to supplement the family’s income.
After his wife’s passing, he continued to run this small business, and also took on the job of sending and picking up children in the village to and from school to earn extra income.
In addition, he is skilled in carpentry—the house he currently lives in with his children, as well as most of their furniture, were all made by his own hands.
Kamarudin has now applied for assistance from the Islamic Charity Fund (Baitulmal), and Kuching Hope Place continues to provide essential food aid to this family of three.
