Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) legislative caucuses have proposed the impeachment of President Lai Ching-te, and the case will be scheduled in the Legislative Yuan on Monday, with a draft schedule for impeachment proceedings expected as early as Friday.

According to Taiwan’s United Daily News, the KMT (Blue) and TPP (White) legislative caucuses have reached a consensus. Regarding the impeachment proposal against Lai Ching-te, the issue will be scheduled at the Legislative Yuan’s Procedural Committee on Monday (December 22).
The Legislative Yuan may put forth a draft schedule for the impeachment process as soon as Friday (the 26th). The blue and white camps plan to stretch out the legislative impeachment proceedings as a way to counter Lai Ching-te.
After Premier Cho Jung-tai refused to sign the Legislative Yuan’s third reading of the Fiscal Revenue and Expenditure Division Law amendment, blue and white lawmakers announced the impeachment proposal against President Lai Ching-te.

KMT caucus secretary-general Lo Chih-chiang said Saturday (the 20th) that the draft impeachment schedule will include holding public hearings, inviting the impeached President Lai Ching-te to the Legislative Yuan to provide explanations, the voting timeline, etc. Apart from events at the Legislative Yuan, related activities may also be held nationwide, as the aim is to let the Taiwanese people know about the defense of Taiwan’s democracy and the impeachment of a president who violated the constitution.
TPP caucus convener Huang Kuo-chang stated that the impeachment document has already been signed and submitted to the Legislative Yuan’s Secretariat, and will be brought into the Procedural Committee on Monday. Public hearings will be held across the country first, then the process will move to the impeachment vote.
He emphasized once again that, in accordance with the Legislature’s Functions Exercise Act, Lai Ching-te will be invited to attend and explain in person.
