(US, 22nd) After negotiators from the United States, Russia, Ukraine, and Europe concluded talks in Florida, UK Prime Minister Starmer spoke by phone with US President Trump, with both leaders discussing how to “bring a just and lasting end” to the war in Ukraine.
According to comprehensive reports from Reuters and Bloomberg, the UK Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement on Sunday (December 21), saying the US and UK leaders first reviewed the Ukraine war. Starmer also explained to Trump the efforts of the “voluntary alliance” in supporting any potential peace agreement and ensuring a just and lasting resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Starmer also introduced to Trump the UK's candidate for the new Ambassador to Washington. The former UK Ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, was dismissed in September due to his reported connection with the notorious late US financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Epstein was a convicted sex offender who pleaded guilty to charges of soliciting sex from minors and was sentenced in 2008. After his release, he was classified as a Level 3 sex offender. His crimes involved grooming underage girls to provide sexual services, and organizing such activities on his private island, Little St. James.
Epstein was known to have close ties with many prominent US political and business figures, including Trump. He died in prison in August 2019, ruled as “suicide”. During his campaign for president last year, Trump promised to release the Epstein files, but since returning to the White House in January, he has yet to fulfill this promise.
On November 18, both houses of the US Congress overwhelmingly passed a bill requiring the Department of Justice to release all Epstein files by the December 19 deadline. On November 19, Trump signed the bill into law.
The US Department of Justice began publishing files related to the late sex offender Epstein on its official website on December 19, but a large portion of the documents were redacted, drawing strong criticism from Democrats and Epstein's victims.
