France to Build New Aircraft Carrier to Replace 'Charles de Gaulle'

(Paris, 22nd) French President Emmanuel Macron announced on the 21st that France will build a new aircraft carrier to replace the currently operating 'Charles de Gaulle' carrier.

Macron made the announcement during his visit to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

According to French television channel BFM, the new aircraft carrier will be nuclear-powered, allowing it to sail at sea for long periods without refueling, while also ensuring the energy supply for its critical equipment. The report states that the new carrier will be approximately 310 meters long with a displacement of 78,000 tons. It is expected to be equipped with 2,000 soldiers and staff, and will carry about 40 aircraft, including 'Rafale' fighter jets, E-2C airborne early warning aircraft, and NH90 helicopters.

Macron said that this new carrier will become a symbol of France's national strength and demonstrate the country's industrial and technological capabilities.

The 'Charles de Gaulle' carrier entered service in 2001, measures about 261 meters in length, and displaces 42,000 tons. It is expected to retire in 2038. The new aircraft carrier is planned to be commissioned just before the 'Charles de Gaulle' is decommissioned.
