(Bangkok, 30th) Since the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, more than 110,000 Cambodian citizens have returned home via border checkpoints.
According to the Khmer Chinese Times, Cambodian Minister of Labor Heng Sour told the newspaper on the 29th that during the tense border situation from June 8 to 28, a total of 110,375 Cambodian nationals returned from Thailand. Among them, 81,720 people held border passes, accounting for 74.03% of the total; of the returnees, 36,796 were workers, making up 33.33%.
In addition, Ministry of Labor spokesman Son Messa told the newspaper that as of the end of March this year, about 1.298 million Cambodian citizens were working and living in Thailand. The current wave of people returning to their hometowns is expected to continue for some time.
Heng Sour said that as of June 28, the total demand for labor in factories and enterprises across Cambodia had reached 248,928 positions. Among them, the agricultural sector needs 28,684 people, the industrial sector 210,635 people, and the service industry has 9,609 vacancies.
“This wave of returning workers will become an important source to supplement local labor,” Minister Heng Sour stated. The government will continue to assist returnees in finding employment and stabilizing their livelihoods and families through skills training and job-matching mechanisms.
