(Singapore, 30th) As the durian peak season arrives, a durian stall in Serangoon, Singapore is giving back to customers and celebrating the country’s 60th anniversary by giving away 600 kilograms of premium durians daily for six consecutive days. Members of the public only need to present their Pioneer Generation or Blue CHAS card to receive one durian each.
According to Shin Min Daily News, this year’s durian season, which started this week, is expected to last until September. The “Li Sheng Durian King” stall at 1001 Upper Serangoon Road in northeast Singapore will be giving away 600 kilograms of premium durians to customers each day from July 1st to July 6th.
Owner Soo Mei Feng (aged 52) told reporters in an interview that as long as customers show their Pioneer Generation or Blue CHAS card, they can receive one durian for free.
“We give away about 600 durians each day, with each weighing about 1 kilogram, so in 6 days that's 3,600 durians.”
Soo Mei Feng said she has always wanted to give back to her customers and hopes that people who usually can’t afford durian will get a chance to taste it. Last year, she also held a durian giveaway event, handing out 1,000 kilograms of premium durians in a single day.
“The feedback we got last year was good, everyone was very happy, so we’re doing it again this year. Since it coincides with Singapore’s 60th anniversary, we decided to run the giveaway for six days in a row.”
She added that last year the giveaway started at 3pm, but this year it has been changed to 5pm each evening. “We’re concerned everyone would queue in the heat, so this year we changed it to start at 5pm, so people won’t have to stand in the sun.”
The Pioneer Generation Card and Blue CHAS card are healthcare cards for Singaporean citizens.
