(Miri, 28th) – Sarawak's Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that Sarawak has always been known for its racial unity, religious harmony, and cultural integration. People of various ethnic groups jointly celebrate different festivals, and this way of life—marked by mutual respect and harmonious coexistence—has earned Sarawak respect at home and abroad, making it a model of unity.
He said that Sarawak has long maintained a social atmosphere of harmonious coexistence among diverse races, religions, and cultures. During various festive periods, people of different ethnic backgrounds support each other and celebrate together, showcasing Sarawak's unique spirit of unity.
He made these remarks yesterday afternoon while attending the Hari Raya Haji sacrificial ceremony at Abubakar Mosque in the Sina Ting area.
He noted that the mosque holds the sacrificial ceremony for Hari Raya Haji every year, and has long received support from the public. He himself participates in and supports the event each year, including sponsoring cattle for the ceremony.
He pointed out that this year, the mosque's sacrificial scale was quite large, with a total of 10 cows being slaughtered over two days and the meat distributed to Muslim residents in the Sina Ting area—a very meaningful act of charity.
He said that regardless of whether it is Hari Raya Haji, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, or other festive occasions, Sarawakians will always support and take part in the celebrations; this year, he also visited several locations to observe and participate in related activities, and was invited to mosques and prayer rooms to celebrate the festive season with Muslim friends.
“In addition to participating in events, I also helped distribute the sacrificial meat, which demonstrates the good living culture and unity of Sarawak’s people.”
He said that Sarawak Premier Abang Johari's selection as the chairman of the National Islamic Welfare Organization (PERKIM) also shows that Sarawak is recognized and respected.
He hopes that the people of Sarawak will continue to maintain this harmonious lifestyle, work together for development, and strive towards the post-pandemic Sarawak development strategy goals for 2030, working to become a high-income region.
He said that the Sarawak government has always fairly assisted the development of all religions, not only supporting Islamic affairs but also helping other religious groups, and has set up special agencies to handle religious matters.
“During Sarawak Day celebrations, all religious groups participate in prayer events together. Whether Muslim or followers of other religions, everyone shares the same goal: to pray for peace, tranquility, progress, and prosperity in Sarawak.”
He called on the people to continue to strengthen this good culture of living so that the people of Sarawak and Malaysia can live in an environment of peace, happiness, and tranquility.
Abubakar Mosque in the Sina Ting area has always, during Hari Raya Haji each year, carried out slaughtering at the farm first before transporting the cut beef to the mosque for distribution. This year, for the first time, the slaughtering ceremony was conducted directly within the mosque premises.
Yesterday, the mosque slaughtered 5 yellow cattle and 1 water buffalo, distributing the beef to more than 250 Muslims; tomorrow, 3 more water buffalo and 1 yellow cattle will be slaughtered and the meat distributed to those who have not yet received it. In total, 10 cattle will be slaughtered over the two days.
It is understood that the mosque organizes the sacrificial event every year in conjunction with Hari Raya Haji, and distributes coupons in advance to Muslims so that they can exchange them for beef on the day; those without coupons can also go directly to the mosque to receive the meat.
Additionally, Lee Kim Shin sponsors one cow every year to the mosque for the sacrificial ceremony as a sign of support.
