Lee Kim Shin: Sarawak's Model of Multireligious Harmony Sets an Example for the World

(Miri, 28th) – Sarawak Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that Sarawak has long been a model of harmonious coexistence among multiple races and religions. Not only within our country, but even on the international stage, Sarawak has proven to the world that religious and cultural differences are not a problem, but rather the very foundation for unity and inclusion.

He made these remarks yesterday morning while attending the Hari Raya Haji celebration held at the Permyjaya Ayalan Mosque.

He pointed out that positive values among individuals are crucial in strengthening unity within a multiethnic and multicultural society. Therefore, people of all ethnicities must continue to uphold the spirit of mutual assistance, love, understanding, and respect to maintain the peace and tranquility enjoyed by Sarawak for so long, and to pass this harmony on to the next generation.

He said that differences are not a barrier to unity. Whether in Sarawak or throughout Malaysia, people of all races should continue to strengthen their camaraderie and work together to uphold social harmony.

He hopes that through the Hari Raya Haji celebration, people will continue to cultivate a sense of gratitude, strengthen connections among one another, and further consolidate the spirit of unity among different races and religions.

Lee Kim Shin noted that the people of Sarawak have always shown great tolerance and respect, and the mutual respect among different religions has also gained recognition from the international community.

He said that the Sarawak government has established a Unit for Other Religions to help handle non-Islamic religious affairs, demonstrating the state government’s commitment to religious harmony.

"For example, during the celebration of Sarawak Day, all religions join in prayer together. Whether it is Muslims or other religious groups, everyone shares the same goal — the well-being of the people, social development, and national prosperity."

He stated that Sarawak is currently advancing towards the goal of becoming a high-income area, and its people share a common direction — to promote the continued development of Sarawak and the nation.

He emphasized that no religion teaches people to divide society or create chaos. All religions advocate doing good and maintaining social peace, so people should cherish the current harmonious and stable social environment even more.

He revealed that this year, the Ayalan Mosque’s Hari Raya Haji celebration involved the sacrifice of seven water buffaloes, with the sacrificial meat distributed to nearly 400 people.

He added that in addition to this event, he has also made donations to mosques in various places in Sarawak, including Miri and Sibuti, to support the holding of local Hari Raya Haji celebrations.
