Parliament is Not a Place for Slander, Says Johari: MPs Must Set a Good Example

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tan Sri Johari, reminded Members of Parliament to exhibit mature politics and set the best example to the people, as outlined by the national principles in fostering virtue.

He mentioned this today after the House of Representatives session commenced, stating that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, also reminded MPs in his royal address yesterday, that if MPs do not adhere to parliamentary conventions, he and the Deputy Speaker will take action.

His Majesty indicated that Parliament is not a place for being stubborn, insulting, or slandering others, and MPs must be the bastion of national unity, not the drivers of division among the people. They must stop politicizing every issue and should not focus solely on party lines or personal groups.

Johari also mentioned that the 15th session of the 4th season of Parliament will run from yesterday until March 6, lasting 18 days, and during this period, it is expected that the sessions may extend into the evening or may forgo a lunch break.

Additionally, Members of Parliament, led by the Secretary of the House of Representatives, Nizam Mydin, recited the 'National Principles,' after which the Speaker made a slip by referring to them as the 'Neighborliness Plan.'

The Speaker said, after everyone recited the Neighborliness Plan (rukun tetangga), someone immediately corrected him to 'National Principles' (Rukun Negara), and the Speaker promptly apologized and retracted his statement, correcting his error.
