Former EXO member and Canadian singer-actor Kris Wu was sentenced to 13 years in prison by a Beijing court in 2021 for alleged rape. Recently, shocking rumors have surged online in China, claiming he “died of starvation in prison” or was “raped and died unjustly,” causing a social media frenzy.
Some netizens even circulated a photo said to be of “Kris Wu in prison,” showing a man in a blue prison uniform, hands folded and seated on a bench undergoing questioning, his face pixelated. The photo quickly went viral on Weibo, with many users questioning its authenticity.
On the 11th, Jiangsu police promptly posted on their official Weibo to debunk the rumors, stating: “The so-called ‘latest photo of Kris Wu’ circulating online is a doctored fake; please don’t spread it.” Police further explained the image is actually a manipulated photo from a previous news report, where netizens swapped the original inmate’s face with Kris Wu’s.
