(Bangkok, 6th) — Thai police took action on the 4th by inspecting a restaurant on Koh Phangan, detaining a British woman at the scene for allegedly teaching sexual yoga (also known as tantric yoga) on the island.
Police indicated that they had earlier received reports of advertisements on Facebook promoting the “tantric yoga” classes, held every Tuesday, with each session costing 400 baht (52 ringgit), and that the activities were suspected of indecency.
When police arrived at the restaurant, 40-year-old British woman Maria was teaching foreign students. Upon inspection, Maria held a valid passport and a work permit as a “Client Relations Manager” for a property management company. Police proceeded to take her in for further questioning.
Maria admitted to organizing tantric yoga classes and working as an instructor teaching tantric yoga meditation, splitting earnings with the restaurant as a venue fee. At the scene, police seized five class admission tickets, 12 advertisements for couples’ tantric massage, and a notebook containing details on teaching the “sacred sexuality of tantric yoga.”
Police made a preliminary charge against Maria for “working beyond the scope of her permit in Thailand,” transferring her case to the Koh Phangan police station for further processing.
