Moral education key to instill ethical responsibility

KUCHING: The strengthening of tasawuf education is timely amid the growing influence of technology and the need to instill ethical responsibility.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the matter will be discussed with the Minister of Education as part of efforts to review and restructure the national curriculum and teaching syllabus.

“I believe this is the right time to do so, given the challenges we face today with the arrival of technology, especially AI.

“We need to instill ethics and values in our society, because even though we have advanced technology, we must also be responsible,” he said.

He said this after officiating the Fikrah Siddiq Fadzil Sarawak Zone Seminar 2.0 at Sarawak State Library on Saturday (Nov 8).

He added that such responsibility must be grounded in Malaysia’s national values and principles of humanity, which reflect the country’s diverse social and cultural backgrounds.

“That’s why I feel it’s very important for us to reintroduce moral education, or tasawuf, so that we can nurture our children from an early age.

“This way, they can understand the cultural values appropriate to our country, which has diverse backgrounds and beliefs,” he added.

He stressed that it is crucial for the younger generation to understand that every action has implications that may evoke different reactions from people of varying backgrounds.

“That’s the awareness we must cultivate — and that’s my intention in bringing up this topic,” he said.

On the level of education targeted, he said the initiative would typically start from the primary level before progressing to secondary education.

“Usually, when it comes to education, we start from the very beginning.

“However, if it cannot be introduced formally, it should still be emphasised through co-curricular or other programmes to nurture and instil values that align with our nation’s culture and social background,” he said.
