The chairman of China's well-known baijiu brand Wuliangye, Zeng Congqin, is under investigation.

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency, Yicai, The Paper, and other sources, the Sichuan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision announced on Saturday (February 28) that Zeng Congqin, Party Secretary and Chairman of Yibin Wuliangye Group Co., Ltd., and Party Secretary and Chairman of Yibin Wuliangye Co., Ltd., is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and is currently under disciplinary review and supervisory investigation by Yibin Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision.

Wuliangye also released an announcement confirming this news, stating that it has received Zeng Congqin’s “Notice of Filing a Case” and the “Notice of Retention” issued by the Yibin Municipal Supervisory Committee, emphasizing that the company’s production and operations are currently normal.

The official announcement did not disclose the specific time when Zeng Congqin was taken in for investigation. However, according to 21st Century Business Herald, Zeng Congqin was taken away and investigated on the afternoon of last Thursday (February 26).

Just two days earlier, on last Tuesday (February 24), Zeng Congqin presided over the company’s post-Spring Festival gathering for 2026 and delivered a speech.

According to 21st Century Business Herald, Zeng Congqin had sometimes given unscripted speeches at some public Wuliangye events, drawing on his previous experience working in relevant government functions.

Public information shows that Zeng Congqin joined Wuliangye in 2019, successively serving as Deputy Party Secretary and General Manager of Wuliangye Group, Deputy Party Secretary and Chairman of Wuliangye Co., and since February 2022, as Party Secretary and Chairman of Wuliangye Group. Previously, he held positions in Changning County, Cuiping District of Yibin City, and other places.

Zeng Congqin’s predecessor as chairman, Li Shuguang, former deputy director of the Economic Committee of the Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress, was expelled from the Communist Party and public office last October for serious violations of discipline and law.
