IPOH, May 6 (Bernama) -- The three elephants, known as Dara, Amoi, and Kelat (DAK), have shown consistent weight gain according to the latest information from the management of Tennoji Zoo.

The Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) said that this development reflects good health, proper nutrition, and quality daily care.

This indicates that animal welfare is maintained at a high standard, in compliance with best practices for the management of wild animals in captivity.

As a proactive measure and a commitment to transparency, MPT will provide weekly periodic reports regarding the condition of the elephants based on official information received from Tennoji Zoo.

These reports will be shared with stakeholders and the public to ensure accurate and authentic information is delivered.

MPT will also maintain direct communication with Tennoji Zoo management to receive the latest updates and ensure that animal welfare remains the top priority.

“The body weight of Kelat increased by 440 kilogrammes (kg), from 2,360 kg to 2,800 kg; Dara’s weight increased by 215 kg (1,985 kg to 2,200 kg) and Amoi by 200 kg (1,280 kg to 1,480 kg),” according to MPT.

DAK are currently housed at Tennoji Zoo, Japan, under an international cooperation agreement signed between Tennoji Zoo, Osaka, and the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari (represented by MPT) on May 19, 2022, and October 6, 2022. The agreement is for a period of 25 years.

This update follows reports from various activists and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that had previously urged the government to bring the elephants home, alleging that the animals were suffering and that the environment at the zoo was unsuitable.
