Singapore Government Launches Traineeship to Assist Graduates, Provides 800 Positions with Allowances Up to $2,400

(Singapore, 22nd) Even if graduates are unable to find a job immediately, they can still gain valuable workplace experience through the newly launched 'Graduate Industry Traineeship (GRIT)' program.

This program is expected to offer up to 800 spots, open to Singaporean citizens and permanent residents who graduated last year or this year, including graduates from universities, polytechnics, and Institutes of Technical Education. Graduates from private universities and overseas institutions are also eligible to apply. Those who graduated earlier but completed National Service last year or this year are also eligible to participate.

According to the scheme, graduates can undergo traineeships at industry or government agencies for three to six months, receiving a monthly training allowance of $1,800 to $2,400, of which 70% is covered by the government, with the remaining portion borne by participating companies or agencies.

Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr Tan See Leng announced details of the plan to the media today while attending the OCBC Learning Festival. He pointed out that the labour market remains robust and most graduates have found employment successfully, but the government understands the concerns of graduates and their families, so it is striving to provide more support.

"The traineeship scheme allows graduates to accumulate practical experience and skills, while enhancing their employability, paving the way for more career opportunities in the future," he said.

He revealed that companies such as OCBC Bank, Grab, ST Engineering, and Sea Group will participate, offering traineeship opportunities in fields including business data analytics, digital marketing, and engineering.

On the other hand, the Public Service Division will also coordinate the 'Graduate Industry Traineeship (Government Agencies)', providing graduates with opportunities to undergo traineeships in the public service sector.

Dr Tan emphasised that the currently available 800 traineeship positions are just the beginning, and the Public Service Division is still recruiting for about 2,400 full-time positions, which should not be confused with the traineeships. He also pointed out that unlike the SGUnited Traineeships Scheme launched during the pandemic, the current job market remains strong, with the employment rate for graduates from some universities exceeding 90%.

The government will adjust the scale of the traineeship program in accordance with economic trends and the state of the job market, in order to avoid impacting the full-time employment market, while also ensuring that companies do not use the traineeship as a reason to retrench existing staff in similar positions.

The traineeship positions will be posted progressively on the MyCareersFuture and Careers@Gov websites. Interested parties can register online first to obtain the latest information.
