(Manila, 22nd) The United States has reiterated its commitment to the Philippines' maritime security by delivering equipment worth a total of 1.9 million pesos (about US$34,500) to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), for use at the Fleet Maintenance and Repair Group (MRG) workshop in Sangley Point, Cavite. The handover ceremony took place on August 18.
The US government stated in a release that this assistance, provided by the US State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), aims to enhance the PCG's capabilities in vessel maintenance and repair.
Rear Admiral Supangan, Commander of the PCG Fleet, stated: "This assistance is an important step in strengthening the maintenance group's capacity-building, embodying the close cooperation between the US and the Philippines in promoting maritime security."
INL Director at the US Embassy in the Philippines, Rachelle, also reaffirmed continued US support for the Philippines, pledging to assist the PCG in fully fulfilling all vessel maintenance needs. She said that the equipment and backup power systems handed over this time will promote a broader and more effective repair program.
The MRG workshop at Sangley Point, covering an area of 400 square meters, was commissioned in May 2024. It was funded by the US Department of Defense with 54 million pesos (US$950,000), and received technical support from the US Coast Guard to supplement existing facilities at Manila port.
This workshop will strengthen the repair capabilities of both small vessels and large patrol ships, which is crucial for the Philippines to carry out maritime law enforcement and defense missions. The US has also planned to provide more technical training, logistical planning, and equipment donations over the next year to further support the PCG's vessel maintenance efforts.
