(Bandar Seri Begawan, 23rd) The first Brunei-Singapore Joint Committee Ministerial Meeting (JCMM) was held on September 15, 2025, in Singapore.
The meeting was co-chaired by Brunei's Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, and Singapore's Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy & Technology), Dr. Tan See Leng.
The meeting provided a platform to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries, enhance mechanism coordination, and support the achievement of more impactful outcomes.
The meeting highlighted the progress made by the joint committee, led by working groups, in priority areas such as food security, medical product supply, and low-carbon energy; as well as cooperation established in areas such as carbon markets, carbon capture and storage, and the green economy following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Strengthening Cooperation in Food and Medical Product Trade and Investment, and the Memorandum of Understanding on Energy and Green Economy Cooperation.
In his welcome remarks, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah emphasized that it is essential to leverage each other's strengths to enhance bilateral cooperation, especially amid the current global economic uncertainties.
He said that platforms such as APEC, ASEAN, and the newly established Future Investment and Trade Partnership (FIT-P) are important channels for ongoing discussions on current issues affecting member states, including supply chain issues. Through this collaboration, the two countries have the opportunity to review the progress already made and jointly set new directions for strengthening bilateral and regional cooperation among senior officials.
At the meeting, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah and Dr. Tan See Leng welcomed the continued progress made by the working groups and strongly supported expanding cooperation beyond the existing MOUs (with a focus on the food and energy sectors). New areas of cooperation identified by both sides include human capital development and tourism.
