KUCHING: The Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) has cultivated a strong and stable ecosystem of interfaith harmony that positions Sarawak as a model of unity across Malaysia.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said UNIFOR, the only one of its kind in the country, is a clear reflection of the GPS Sarawak government’s deep respect for the diverse religious landscape in Sarawak.
“As part of our inclusive development agenda, the Sarawak government has continued to support UNIFOR as an agency that plays a vital role in promoting harmony and supporting the well-being of our diverse religious communities.
“With sustained support, we will continue to strengthen this harmony through UNIFOR by enhancing the infrastructure of religious institutions and ensuring that every citizen enjoys freedom of faith and peace of worship,” he said.
He said this in his text speech read out by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the Interfaith Thanksgiving Event in conjunction with the 2025 Sarawak Day Celebration, held here in Miri Division at Meritz Hotel Miri yesterday (Jul 20).
He added that the event yesterday provided a meaningful opportunity for people to learn from one another, connect, and appreciate the beauty of spiritual diversity.

“When we come together to celebrate our respective traditions, we embrace the spirit of inclusivity — a principle embedded within our PCDS 2030 strategy, which is vital in building a better Sarawak for all.
“Let this event stand as a platform for shared values, a reaffirmation of our commitment to mutual respect, and a stepping stone toward deeper unity and a more holistic society.
“Let us continue fostering these bonds and not just on this special day, but in the days and years to come — as we move toward a future where faith is a source of cooperation, not division,” he said.
For the record, since 2017, the Sarawak government has allocated substantial funding for the development and enhancement of houses of worship and religious facilities across Sarawak including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Sikhism, Bahá’i, and traditional belief systems.
To date, RM475 million has been distributed through UNIFOR to support these efforts — anchored in the principle of social inclusivity.
“In addition, RM90 million has also been allocated to missionary schools in Sarawak since 2021. In total, the Sarawak government has allocated RM565 million to UNIFOR.
“This financial commitment is a reflection of our dedication to ensuring all Sarawakians can worship in safe, dignified and comfortable environments regardless of faith,” he said.
On behalf of the Sarawak government and UNIFOR, Abang Johari also extended greetings to all: “I wish all Sarawakians a Happy Sarawak Day 2025.”
Earlier, the event began with a series of interfaith prayers representing Taoism, Sikhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Bahá’í faith, each led by respective religious leaders, followed by a special performance by various religious organisations.
