(Selangau, 25th) A dashcam video that went viral on social media shows a car driving dangerously on the road from Selangau to Kuching. After police intervened to investigate, they discovered the driver was operating the vehicle while fatigued.
Selangau Police District Chief Mohamad Haid said the incident occurred on March 22 (Sunday) at around 5:34pm, and was recorded by a member of the public who uploaded it to the Facebook page "Sarawak Roads Update."
"The footage shows a Perodua Kancil entering the opposite lane near the Kampung Keranji stretch, posing a danger to other road users and potentially causing a collision," he said.
He noted that after the video went viral, the Selangau Police District Headquarters Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Unit (BSPT) promptly launched an investigation and successfully tracked down the driver involved.
"The driver arrived at the district police headquarters traffic office at 1:10pm on March 24 (Tuesday) to assist in the investigation."
"Preliminary investigations reveal that the driver admitted to driving dangerously due to fatigue after attending a religious event at Kampung Blimbing, on the way back to Kuching from Selangau." he said.
The police investigation found that the driver had crossed double lines and failed to stay within the proper lane, violating traffic regulations.
Authorities have issued two traffic summonses to the driver.
Mohamad Haid reminded the public to ensure they are in good physical condition before driving, especially on busy roads, to avoid endangering themselves and others.
