Colombia Agrees to Accept Deported Immigrants, US Suspends Tariff Increase

The White House issued a statement on the 26th indicating that since the Colombian government has agreed to accept deported immigrants, the US government will suspend the previous plan by President Trump to impose additional tariffs on Colombia.

Earlier that day, Colombian President Petro stated that Colombia would not allow American flights carrying Colombian immigrants to enter the country.

He said that before accepting deported immigrants, the Trump administration "must develop an agreement for dignified treatment." Forced deportation of Colombian immigrants involves the "dignity of Colombia and Latin America," and immigrants are not criminals and must be treated with due dignity.

Subsequently, US President Trump pointed out that he has instructed the US government to take retaliatory measures, including imposing a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Colombia and increasing the tariff to 50% in a week.

He posted on social media saying he just learned that two deportation flights departing from the US were not allowed to land in Colombia. President Petro of Colombia's refusal to accept these flights has endangered the "national security" and "public security" of the United States and has instructed the US government to take "urgent and decisive retaliatory measures" immediately.

Other retaliatory measures include imposing travel bans on Colombian government officials and all their allies and supporters, and immediately revoking visas; enhancing Customs and Border Protection inspections of all Colombian personnel and goods; invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose financial, banking, and economic sanctions on Colombia, etc.
